when you head out the door for work this morning, you want to know, is your house safe? well, one nearby community is telling neighbors don't be so sure. he says he was just try to go nurse them back to health and animal control says this is no way to treat an animal or in this case animals. try 40 of them. we'll explain coming up on this wednesday, october 3rd. good morning, maryland, i'm charley crowson. >> i'm megan pringle, thanks for joining us. we have a lot to talk about before we get to those stories, in particular weather and traffic. lynette is going to let you know how to dress those kids and lauren is going to tell you how to get on the roads because the big story this morning is the fog. before we talk about everybody, we -- everything, we do want to tell you about some school delays, cecil county on a two- hour delay. >> also queen anne's county and kent county on 90-minute delays and in queen anne county no pre- k today, this all as a result of fog. >> how are the roads looking?

>>reporter: we are dealing with accidents everywhere. i'll have more coming up. but that reduced visibility is the main concern right now. >> exactly. we knew today coming in that it was going to be a busy bad day for us up here and that's exactly what we're getting. dense fog advisory in effect until 8:00 for a lot of areas right now. the areas there are shaded in the gray. you can stay home, close to home and have some dense fog advisories and also you can head toward the north and east and have some dense fog advisories there and slide off to the west and also south, so they're all around here. but what we're talking about is cecil county, also hartford county, baltimore county, the city and also anne arundel county. this will expire at 8:00. even once it expires, we'll still be dealing with some patchy fog out there. we can see the visibility now, it is definitely reduced. the last time i showed you this across the eastern shore, we were at seven miles. that has gone downhill. and as we check out what's going on on maryland's most powerful radar right now, we are nice and dry. get out there and do what you have to do, but take it easy on the roadways. let's get a check now of the

abc 2 news time saver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. talk about all you have. >>reporter: yes, lynette. well, that heavy fog really causing a mess out there on the roads. you will want to expect reduced visibility across the region. we do have some trouble in anne arundel county. there's a crash right now at the bay bridge. it's right on the eastbound lanes of route 50. and more problems on route 100. there's another accident right along the eastbound lanes at katherine avenue, so do watch out for that. average speed clocking in at just 39 miles per hour. in west baltimore there's another crash right on edmondson avenue at poplar grove street. if you are using the jfx to get into the city, traffic starting to pick up. as far as the beltway is concerned, as we check in and take a live look outside, here on the northwest corner at old court road, you'll notice that outer loop really slowing down. here's what 695 looks like in parkville at hartford road. again, that fog going to be the main concern. no significant delays, though, heading up towards 83. that's a look at your abc 2 time saver traffic. charley, over to you. politics one of the big stories today. after more than a year of

primary campaigns and elections, the race for the white house has come down to two candidates and tonight those men will meet for the first time in a highly anticipated debate from denver. a number of political pundits have said tonight's debate in colorado will go a long way toward separating those two candid obama and governor mitt romney from a very tightly-locked race. the campaigns, though, they're downplaying the expectations from tonight's squareoff between these two candidates. now, governor romney is now saying that tonight's debate is not going to go a really long way toward determining a definitive winner. let's listen. >> in my view, it's not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves, the president or myself, it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> and by contrast, the president has been preparing outside of las vegas. to his supporters, he remains confident, but he says he's not underestimating his opponent.

>> governor romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> pbs' jim lehrer will moderate tonight's debate from denver at 9:00 p.m. you can watch it here on abc news. a new cnn poll has this race as a dead heat when factoring in the three-point margin of error. no doubt you have seen plenty of ads about expanded gambling here in our state. well, the washington redskins are now showing support for question 7. the team issued a statement in favor of building a casino in pg county and adding table games to the state's existing casinos. the representative says a yes vote for question 7 is a tremendous opportunity to create jobs and increase funding for public schools in maryland. you have a chance to say thank you to those who have sacrificed so much just to protect us. baltimore's international association of firefighters, they are hosting a crab feast and it's all to honor colleagues who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

it's happening tonight, if you're curious and you want to go, and it's happening at the baltimore museum of industry on key highway. the ceremony begin -- that ceremony will begin happening with the ringing of a historic shipyard bell and a moment of silence. it's being called a makeshift disploo in pasadena. 40 animals pulled out of a home owned by shane taylor, not just dogs or birds, but a tarantula, a chinchilla and even a pig. taylor says he was just trying to nurse these animals back to atlanta. animal control says the animals are not being cared for properly. >> i don't go out looking for animals to take. it takes a lot of work, it really does, so i don't go out looking for animals. but as they come to me, if i have the capacity and then i'm more than willing to help out. >> during the summer anne arundel county animal control started working with taylor.

he gave up 10 exotic animals with the promise he wouldn't take in any more. the shelter director says that didn't happen and all of the animals had to be removed. if you live in anne arundel county, you're going to want to be extra careful after seven attempted burglaries burglaries in less than a week's time. homes were targeted during the day and they weren't successful all of the time. when the burglar got into the home he used the rear sliding door, something to keep in mind. police say these crimes may be connected. the burglaries all occurred between september 24th and the 29th. so we have a sandwich as a weapon and we are not making this up. police say a man in nebraska attacked his wife using her late night snack. police say an argument between the man and his wife. he then pushed her and the sandwich was then used and rubbed in her face. this is so strange. deputies found evidence of the attack on the carpet, pieces of lunch meat, that's what they found. now the man was sentenced to

five days in jail. i'm pretty sure if most of us ever came into contact with a whale shark, we probably wouldn't hope for a repeat experience. >> the man you are about to meet, the whale shark he caught on camera, reaching out and touching it, all part of this up-close-and-personal encounter. and a monkey on house arrest. that's right, a monkey on house arrest. you may be wondererring why or what this is all about. we'll tell you what it is coming up. and we're taking a break from the rain right now. i'll tell you when it moves pack in coming up. >>reporter: 95 is extremely jammed here at old court road. i'll show you what else you'll need to watch out for coming up on "good morning maryland."

quarter mile in a lot of spots still. beginning to see some improvement in baltimore, now visibility. one mile of reduced along the eastern shore we're at five. we do actually have some school delays this morning. you definitely need to take it easy as you head out and about. also we are looking at the facts that we are dry on maryland's most powerful radar. we will begin to see more changing coming through the day, but for right now dry weather will persist. as we go into the afternoon, there's a chance for more scattered showers to pop up in the forecast for us. and then we head you to some temperatures this morning where we're looking at -- peaceful we're in the 70s in a lot of spots -- basically we're in the 70s in a lot of spots this morning. we're at 65 degrees right now as we head over into bethesda, and we're also dealing with a temperature in perryman at 70 degrees. dense fog across that area as well. let's get a check now of the abc 2 time saver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. >>reporter: good morning, lynette. it's very foggy across the region, so you will want to expect reduced visibility. be sure to slow down. we do have several accidents. trouble in hartford county where there's a crash right on pulaski highway at abingdon

road. and more problems in anne arundel county where there's a crash on the eastbound lanes of route 50 just before you get to the bay bridge. more problems on route 100, it's a very busy morning, there's another crash along the eastbound lanes there at katherine avenue. and now if you are using 95 to get downtown, here's what it looks like at 395, traffic really starting to pick up in the area. and you'll notice that reduced visibility there. so it's extremely important to slow down this morning. here's what the beltway looks like in parkville at hartford road. the fog will continue here. traffic really starting to pick up on the outer loop. that will continue as you make  the drive up towards providence road. that is a look at your abc 2 news time saver traffic. megan and charley, over to you. two mark train lines soon could be under new management. today the maryland board of public works is scheduled to take up this issue. $205 million contract with a canadaian company. now, if the board votes in favor of this contract, the company will run through camden and brunswick lines for nearly six years. now, a french railroad company also put a bid in for a

contract. that rail line has been criticized by holocaust survivors for failing to fully disclose its role in transporting victims during world war ii. if you plan to visit the aberdeen proving ground, the 715 route the gate near the visitors' center will be closed friday night and on the weekend as searchers look for live explosives. the search is expected to take about two months. drivers will be redirected to the route 22 gate during those closures. and this morning's consumer news for you, another recall expansion to tell you about. this one has to do with the ricotta salana from forever cheese. those have a october 2nd sell- by date being recalled. the previous recall dealt with cheese sold between june 20th and august 9th. these recalls are in place because of a deadly listeria outbreak. symptoms for listeria can include fever, muscle aches, nawsia and diarrhea. we have more developments on this story that we told you about, a man from east

baltimore died while he was in police custody. officers say it was from swallowing drugs, but a medical examiner's report calls his death a homicide. abc 2 news' sherree johnson is live this morning at police headquarters with more on this case. now, sherree, this case is taking a lot of twists and turns. >>reporter: megan, yes. that medical examiner's report also says anthony anderson's injuries were to his ribs, his spleen. he also had internal injuries and internal bleeding. now, the city police officers, three officers involved in this case are right now on paid leave. so far no word on if any charges will be filed against these officers. this incident happened on september 21st. anderson's family says he came out of a bar on east biddle street when he was confronted by police. now, his mother, son, daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter were also there. now, initially police said anderson tried to swallow drugs. police would not speak on camera, but they confirmed drugs were not a factor in

anderson's death. >> we want the officers arrested and we want them convicted because if it was a normal citizen that committed homicide, they would be behind bars. >> and that paid vacation at the taxpayers' expense should come to an end. >> the family attorney says that he plans to file a lawsuit in this case and community activists also say that they plan to hold a protest if charges are not filed against the officers. reporting live in downtown baltimore, sherree johnson, abc 2 news. the jail will be the discussion point at morgan state university a little bit later today. the conference will focus on whether minority youth are disproportionately represented in prison. about 350 people are expected to attend that meeting. baltimore county police have made an arrest in a string of abductions in the area. two men are now in custody and this morning abc 2 news' linda stow is live outside county police headquarters with the very latest. and, linda, what new information do we have this morning? >>reporter: police have identified the suspects as 21-

year-old kenyon waller and 25- year-old william campbell, both of baltimore. they are being held this morning without bond at the county detention center. police say the two men abducted women, several women from a county bus stop no audio ] teens were taken from a bus stop in cattensville and the other day police say a man and woman was bus stop. the woman was robbed and let go. police believe there may be more victims out there, so if this case sounds similar to you, please call county police in the city. we're live at county police headquarters, linda stow, abc 2 news. another big celebrity is throwing her weight behind the push for same-sex marriage in maryland. rocker melissa etheridge sent out a letter on behalf of marylanders for marriage equality. in that letter she writes everyone deserves to be treated the same under the law. etheridge also offered campaign donors a chance to meet with

her back stage at an upcoming concert in bethesda. five things you may want to know as you leave the house this morning, millionaires are cashing in on it, unemployment benefits. according to a new report, more than 2000 millionaires collected unemployment checks in 2008 to 2009. now, the study shows that cutting these benefits could save the country $20 million over the next 10 years. american airlines has inspected planes and seats on several 757 airliners. they said the problem was an improperly installed clamp. pilots are expected to authorize a strike taking place earlier this week. is a smaller version of the ipad going to be released anytime soon? an investor tells fortune magazine yes. the unveiling of the eight-inch screen tablets go on sale october 10th. so we use them in school, but textbooks may soon become history themselves. the secretary of education arne

duncan wants printed books to be phases out within 10 years. he says the move is necessary if the u.s. wants to keep up with other currents. it's a big day for the president, that's because not only is president barack obama getting ready for his first presidential debate, he is also celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary, and because of the debate tonight, the president says he and the first lady, michelle obama have planned a belated celebration this weekend. let's talk about what's going on right now because we do have lots of cloud cover out there, but we are dry, so that shower that we had earlier in hartford county and cecil county, that is long gone, pushing off towards the north and east as of now. let me take you outside. you can see what's going on. patchy fog, dense fog in a lot of spots this morning. we do still have that dense fog advisory until 8:00 and hartford county, bel aire, you are one of the counties that is under that advisory. right now temperatures are on the mild side, the warm side in annapolis and chestertown with temperatures in the low- to mid- 70s there. and then we look at the

surface, what's going on. we still do have that system that's riding up to the north, basically staying off towards the west, but that warm front making its way in here. that cold front will continue to move through by tomorrow, so keeping the chances for some showers and some storms in the forecast. but tropics an area of interest right now and this is the one right here. this cluster of showers and thunderstorms could be tropical depression as we head through the remainder of today. and behind me, once again, this still is nadine, will just not get out of here, a house guest that won't go. as we look at what's going on hour by hour today, going for 85 degrees, in that warm sector, we're going to warm things up, keeping a chance of scattered showers in the forecast. and your seven-day forecast brings plenty of sunshine into the picture as we head into your friday with a cooldown as we head into the end of the weekend and also for columbus day. let's get a check now of that traffic with lauren cook, good morning. >>reporter: good morning, lynette. as you mentioned we are dealing with a lot of fog across the region, so you will want to expect reduced visibility. be sure to slow down, maybe turn on those low beams. we do have several accidents.
